Talk by Mark Power

Born in Harpenden, England in 1959, Power is a member of Magnum Photos and is the Professor of photography at the University of Brighton. A major figure in contemporary British photography, Mark Power’s critically acclaimed work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world and published in several books and catalogues.

Mark Power will discuss his 30 year career in photography, including his highly regarded project The Shipping Forecast for which he travelled to the outskirts of Britain photographing all 31 areas covered by the Shipping Forecast broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

His more recent project The Sound of Two Songs began as a commission as part of the Magnum Photos’ project to document countries joining the European Union in 2004. Mark became fascinated by Poland and over the next five years made a further 25 visits, creating a subjective, poetic response to the country he grew to love.

Multi-award-winning photographer Klavdij Sluban’s numerous photographic journeys are not concerned with current news issues, but are often imprinted with literary references, making him one of the most interesting photographers of his generation. Whether it is the Black Sea, the Caribbean, the Balkans, Russia, or China he seeks to get close to rather than to expose the people and places he encounters. He will also be discussing his involvement in photography workshops with young offenders around the world.

Bruno Boudjelal is a photographer and member of the prestigious VU photography agency, Paris. As a Frenchman of Algerian origins, photography for Boudjelal is a lifestyle in which he endlessly questions his own identity and confronts us with our own. In conversation with Tom O’Mara, director at Autograph ABP, Bruno will be talking about his photography career including his very personal work in Algeria over the past 10 years, which has focused on his relationship with his father, and through that, the country as a whole.

His book Disquiet Days/Jours intranquilles has just been published by Autograph ABP, an international photographic arts agency that addresses issues of cultural identity and human rights.

Kiana aims to use her camera to tell stories with a social message, and is currently documenting the challenges Iranian women face, both in Iran and abroad. Her project May God Be with You, My Daughter explores the emotional journeys of Iranian teenage girls as they leave their home country in hope of a better future.

We are delighted to have Judah coming back to the island after his inspirational exhibition and public talk as part of 2010’s festival.

The workshop will begin by examining several stories photographed by Judah Passow in his thirty-year career working for the world’s leading newspapers and magazines. It will then explore how a compelling set of pictures is assembled, and give participants an opportunity to go out and shoot a story of their own choosing. The final session will be devoted to a viewing and analysis of everyone’s work.

You will spend most of the day doing practical exercises using outdoor and indoor locations. You will also review all your photos at the end of the session and learn how to organise them on your computer, how to prepare your pictures for printing and get some basic Photoshop tips.

Light Painting involves very long exposure times, and each individual will need to possess the following if they wish to attend: A digital SLR camera that has Bulb mode, a tripod, a cable release and a basic understanding of how to work the manual functions on their camera.

Please also bring along a torch and be prepared to venture out with the cameras when it gets dark.

This is a day of walking, exploring and experiencing Herm - looking at what makes it unique and trying to capture that in a photograph.

Jean-Christophe will be giving tips throughout on composition, light and settings to help you get the most of your subject.

A special gourmet lunch will be served outdoors with wine (of course).

Moving through time we’ll look at how our perception of photography has changed. From regarding photography as magic to trusting the printed image to be true a representation of the world through to again not trusting modern ways of recording images. Photography has always been a controversial medium and, as hard as it is to think today, has often fallen out of favour with the art world.

This leads us on to finally ask ‘What is an authentic image?’

About John O’Neill. One of the island’s leading professional photographers John O’Neill runs his own business, O’Neill’s Photo Agency. John studied at the University of Wales Newport and Loughborough College of Art & Design. After 12 years he left the role of Picture Editor of the Guernsey Press to follow his original ambition of running his own company.
 

Dewi Lewis’ talk will cover 25 years of publishing photography including a brief outline of the changes over the period, the realities of the industry today, the relationship between photographer and publisher, what publishers are looking for from photographers, how photographers should approach publishing and publishers, and the role of publishing in print in a digital age.

Regarded as the first Science Fiction film, and at 14 minutes one of the longest films of its time, Melies’s A Trip to the Moon has some of the most iconic images in early cinema. The story of a group of scientists travelling to the moon, borrowing from HG Wells and Jules Verne, is an excuse for a serious of stunningly realised tableaux featuring state of the art special effects and not a little humour.

Ricardo Cases’ journey is inwards, to the heart of Spain to uncover expressions of contemporary folklore. His work has explored the practice of pigeon racing or “Colombiculture” in Valencia and Murcia: a female pigeon is released and dozens of brightly painted young male pigeons fly behind her competing for her attention.

Documentary photographers Anastasia Taylor-Lind and Ivor Prickett dedicate their time to making long-term personal projects while also carrying out editorial assignments for a wide range of high-profile international clients. Anastasia Taylor-Lind’s journey to discover the real people behind the sculpted idealized images in fashion magazines took her to Siberia, one of the most remote parts of the world, to photograph Siberian Supermodels.

With a particular interest in post-war situations Ivor Prickett has worked on a number of projects throughout the Balkans and more recently the Caucasus. He lived and worked in the Middle East for two years, where he documented the uprisings in Egypt and Libya in 2011.

Whilst journeys and travel are often driven by the search for the new it is frequently the familiar and banal which capture our attention along that path, providing us with comfort and a sense of belonging. Taking key images from the main exhibitors, the tour will explore themes of the “familiar” and how they resonate across borders and photographic styles.

From the principal themes, elements to be explored are:

• the context to photographs:
• motivation behind the photographs
• differing photographic styles
• the original presentation of the photographs
• the subject matter and influence on composition
• context of the subject matter in more traditional (“familiar”) art (painting, sculpture, etc.)

“Being interested in art from an early age, on leaving school I went to Plymouth Art College to complete a Foundation Year before going to Essex University to read Art History. There I focused on European art of the Enlightenment. Soon, however, my attention was grabbed by the art and architecture of the Americas. This interest ultimately led to an MA and then a PhD in Native American ritual and sociopolitical expressions as described in cultural artefacts, architecture and town planning. I have worked at various museums, including Guernsey Museum, focusing on classification and cataloguing of collections and directed an archaeological excavation in Arizona, USA.” Charles Swainson.
